8:49am: In hawaii!
Last week was also fun, the labmates and I went out for drinks at Red Square and I finally got to don the fur coat and drink in the freezer there like I've been dying to do since enven before I came to LV. Here's some fun facts for you... the fur coats that you wear into the freezer are, annoyingly, fake. The hats are not. They beheded the statue of Lenin outside of the resturaunt around the same time at the real statue in red square was also beheaded, the "head" resides in a plexi case inside the freezer, which also doubles as a table! (you can kindof see it in the picture below in fact!)
Jess was also in town that weekend and on Sat night we revisited all of the old times by heading out to do some line dancing at Gilley's! Fun yet creepy, as the same "charming" old guy was there from like a month ago... heasked me to dance again, which was cute, but then proceeded to sneak around following me at the bar for the rest of the night (ala burger king king style) which definately killed any charm!
But on a more exciting note, I've been in Hawaii for a few days now and it is so nice here! The scenery is beautiful and the atmosphere is so laid back, and more literally, very humid! Have done a little shopping (pricey!) and have spent some time at the beach where the waves are great! My pedicure is fast becomng ruined from waling on the beach, but it is worth it! It has been rainy here for the last few days with anywhere from light mist to outright downpour falling out of the sky, mostly at night, although yesterday it was raining at the beach, I was getting a tan in the rain! It was kindof a nice break from the hot sun! We also went to the Whale Day festival in Kihei yesterday, which was a fun little craft fair/food fest. Hopefully in the coming week, we'll actually see some whales!
11:12am: It's official
I have nothing to do now for like a month! I am back in LV making arrangements to move, and to clean up the lab and my office!
Obviously Boston was a success... although turning in my thesis was rather anticlimatic, don't I deserve more pomp and circumstance after 5.5 yrs? Perhaps it'll sink in later... although it is a wierd feeling to have no anxiety whatsoever about work/school! No, what/can/should I be doing in lab?, or feelings of guilt associated with idly surfing the net or watching The Hills on tv!
There were some bumps with the DC/finding an apartment trip. I started thinking that I'd made the wrong descision, that I didn't want to make comprimises, saw a bunch of places that just weren't going to work out, and then BAM! Found a place that both my friend Lindsey and I were happy with (it's a long story, but I'll have a roomie when I move to DC), and we signed a 1yr lease! So I have a new address in DC... I'm planning on sending out an e-mail to everyone with my new addy in a few days. It's really exciting though, I can't believe I'm moving all the way across the country to start a job and finally become a real adult!! I can't wait! (Oh and making lots of money can't hurt either! Oh the shoes I'll finally be able to buy! But serioulsy it'll be nice to finally both have financial stability and lots of fun money.
My old roomie Jess is in town this weekend and the labbies are planning on taking me out to Red Sq. on Friday, so hopefully I'll get to celebrate a lot this weekend! I am really looking forward to drinking vodka in a fur coat in a walk-in freezer! I've been wanting to do that ever since I moved here!
Then after that, it's movers... then Hawaii for 10 days and then off to DC! Yikes!
On that note, I'm not sure about how work will feel about blogging, but it's one of the first questions I plan on asking during orientation. I'll keep you posted!
not much to report, just killing time waiting for heir d professor to get out of a meeting so we can chat about some of my conclusions ect...
by this time next week, I will have defended my thesis by this time in one month, I'll be in Hawaii by this time in six weeks I'll be working for the man and will have, for the first time ever. a real job.
I tend to browse cnn.com in the mornings instead of reading the paper or watching the news...
Has anyone else noticed that there are an increasing number of "video" articles on that site? It seems to me that almost every other link is to a video! Which drives me crazy for any number of reasons, but really the number one reason is: Do we not read anymore? Is CNN dumbing down their media so that it's more popular (not that CNN was really what I would call intellectual in the first place, but still...)? Or are they not giving us enough credit? I want to READ the news damnit, not watch some stupid video about the recent popularity of pole dancing aerobics!
But seriously nothiing too interesting has been happening here... I've been getting frustrated with work, I feel a bit like this whole thesis thing has been stagnating and that I need a serious jump-start to get it back in gear. It's not helping that the advisor has had several of my first draft chapters for months now and has not gotten back to me about any of them (well besides a 'oh they look fine', which really isn't helpful), so I feel like I can't really re-work the old stuff and the writing of new stuff seems to be inhibited by the fact that I'm not getting any new data... I was hoping to be using the laser for some solids analysis, but it's broken, and the ICP-MS is still not fixed yet (it drives me craaazy because it's been probably 2 months now and I need to use that particular machine, and It's not like I'm in the position now to be waiting paitently until it's fixed). So yeah, work has been...well, frustrating to say the least. And then I feel like I'm being lazy and/or a cry baby because I'm not getting anything done, which of course makes me feel even suckier. I keep dreaming about the apocalypse which is also freaky (I've had apocalyptic dreams before, but never with this frequency!)... is it a signal that I'm not ready for the future? Does it mean that if I continue like this I'm going to be in big trouble? Or am I just being a paranoid nutcase? It's hard to tell sometimes :)
Socially, life has been pretty boring I've been out and about with friends a handfull of times, but really nothing super-interesting or funny has happened...MSU has even been sucking at football so my one outlet for fun and excitement has been actually sort of depressing and sad instead! But on an up note, the parents are in town next week which should be fun! We'll see some shows and eat out, it should be pretty enjoyable! Then after that I'm off to DC for the weekend to mooch off of a friend who is house hunting, so that weekend should be both fun and productive! So really, things should pick up a bit in the future. It'll just mean that I have to have fun and move forward with my thesis, which actually might be easier than feeling bored and lazy and trying to get the thesis done... I guess we'll just have to wait and see!
Back to the thesis bit, I did accomplish my September goal of finishing the first draft of the entire background section, which is good, so I do have a good chunk of it behind me. The second-half will be difficult I imagine, but for different reasons than the first-half...because unlike putting together bits and pieces of new information to form a coherent explanation of something, I'll be having to shape original information and justify it in a manner that is interesting and usefull scientifically, so while I'll have less learning to do, I think that this half won't exactly be a walk in the park either!
My immediate goals are to have Ch 8 poisihed and shiny by the end of this week and to fill in some of the gaps that I've left in the background section (filling in figures and refs mostly, perhaps evaluating a conclusion or two). Then onto Ch 9, which I'll hope to have finished by the end of Oct.!
10:24am: Wag of the Finger
In my latest batch of reading, I came across this sentence: "Decontamination, for example of redundant plants by the use of chemical agents, converts the radioactivity into a liquid form which ideally then requires volume reduction and solidification for final disposal."
In a published and edited book! I'm having to bitch about it because it's really been bugging me, the authors should know better! You sirs, get a wag of my finger!
And you know what else gets a wag of my finger... Yes you Pilates! You and your crazy face torturing rubber bands! (I went to yoga yesterday evening and much to my chagrin the yoga instructor was sick or something and was replaced by a pilates instructor!, Yes I know, you're all thinking, OH THE HORROR! And you'd be right... but I had already gotten changed, driven to the gym and unrolled my mat in the front of the class, so it would have been a little stupid for me to just up and leave. Everything was going along fine (in the way that crunches to loud 80's synthesizer music is fine) until the instructor had us use this horrible band thingy... so we had this like giant rubber-band in each had and our leg up in the air, stretching the band, and I'm just going along miding my own buisness when THWHAP! the band comes off my foot and smacks me straight in the face! I utter some expletive under my breath, there is some muffled giggling in the class but I keep on... I am not going to let this get me down, I am going to be careful not to let this happen agai THWHAP! MotherF$&(@#! It hit me in the face again! And this time I say pretty loudly something like "JESUS H CHRIST!". At this point people are laughing out loud (I don't blame them actually, I probably would have done the same thing) and the instructor turns down the synthesizer music to ask me if I'm okay, and I'm all like yeees, I'm okay, but I AM TOTALLY EMBARRASSED! At that point I almost got up and left... but really doing that would have been more embarrassing, so I stuck it out. People stopped giggling after awhile and then some guy by me farted, which made me feel better, and then the class was over and I can *hopefully* never ever have to go back to a pilates class again!)
I've got more to blog about, but quickly, I just wanted to show everyone how "cool" the girls and I are in our lab grp...
It's Cyn, Amber and I (aka: Nuclear Scientist, Chemist, and Engineer) at the Pahrump Fall Festival in all of our nerdy rhinestony goodness, and YES, in case you were wondering, that is the chart of the nuclides in the background...
I've seen 34 of them (and 7 out of the top 10)... I wonder if that makes me a teen movie freak! ;)
And... Heathers made #5, def. right where it should be! But Cruel Intentions, 10 Things I Hate About You, Wierd Science, and Once Bitten Twice Shy are mysteriously missing from the list...

And the carwash saga continues... because it of course rained on my car on Wed, so it's all dirty again (rain here in Nv makers your car dirtier!) it was so painful to see those first few drops hit my car, and then I was in denial for the next few (like it'll be okay a few drops won't really matter) then I went into anger (Damn you weather!) and finally acceptance (well, there's nothing I can do about it now, I guess that $4 is gone forever, but it's not like its going to break the bank)... I'm over it now mostly, except I still cringe when I have to see my newly dirtied car in the sunshine. At least the inside is still clean!
In other news... I booked a trip to NYC for Nov 2-5, I'm justifying it by saying it's a really expensive birthday present, but really, I just want to see Spamalot! I'm banking that with this much lead time I'll be able to get myself ahead with my thesis so that I can take the weekend off from writing! Otherwise I'll have plenty of time on the airplane! That and the fact that it's going to be an expensive trip might keep me from wanting to go out on the weekends here and spending $$...
I also booked my flight home for Thanksgiving and paid for our groups' wedding present to Charles, I'll get most of that $ back but still, my visa is hurting!!
I met my undergrad helper today! I am so excited about getting one! She seems v. eager and nice, and has had a little more experience in the lab than I was expecting, which is good. I am still hoping that this will facilitate me moving forward with some experiments and that I won't have to spend all that much time training her and/or fixing mistakes than I would normally spend doing the work on my own! We're scheduled for a Microbiology lesson Monday morning, so we'll see how that goes!
Other than that, I've been seriously unmotivated to write my thesis this week, it was stupid of me to take a break because now I can't get in the groove again! It's already after 3 on Fridat and I haven't written a sentence of my Ch4 yet! But I think that if I manage sect 4.1 and 4.2 tonight, that I can finish the chapter by Monday... I just need to start it! *argh*
11:08am: At the car wash
So really the only thing funny/embarassing/therefore interesting thing to happen to me since my last entry was this:
Labor Daybor Jerica and I went to the do it yourself car wash to wash our cars (mine was indeed gross, I had had a dead cockroach on my floor mat for like forever!). One would thing that this would be a cheap and harmless excercise but noooo. #1 The timer machine eats 1 of my quarters, then the towel dispenser eats two more. I go to bitch at the man in the office, but it it locked. I HRUMPH loudly and give the office EDIT:doof door a little kick... then the man comes around the corner and says politely "did the machine eat your quarters?, let me help you get them back", so I feel like a complete ass.
#2 I am vacuuming out my back seat with the powervac thingy they have there and, hey! look! it's my Juicytube that I've been missing (well okay, not exactly, but I did miss it once I realized that I had been missing it...) then THWUP! into the vac my $12 lipgloss goes. OH the Horror! I screamed a little bit in the realization that it would, alas, be gone forever.
#3 I am closing the car door and WHACK! I connect the boniest part of my hip with the pointiest part of my car door, doubling me over in pain for a good 45 seconds, and leaving a nasty looking mark, it still hurts to sleep on my left side...oweee!
Needless to say after that I really needed some dairy queen, which is thankfully, nearby! ;)
Other than that I spent the weekend doing a little line dancing and a lot of drinking (I think I was over compensating for the fact that I never go out anymore or something) followed by a lot of laying around and nursing a hangover dreading having to go into work (it was my own fault for starting my cells growing at a bad time... though so I couldn't really complain) and then laying around some more!
I pretty much took off all of last week (and considering that this week is half over) half of this week, from working on the Thesis. I was a little bit ahead before, and now I'm a little bit behind... I was meaning to do some reading and prepping this morning before group meeting, but as you can probably guess, I've been punting. I did finally apply for graduation today though! So I am officially on the list! But I think that I'd like to have a big chunk of my next chapter done by Monday, hopefully I can pull it off! I'd like to get all of my background chapters done this month, so that I'll have two months to write the 4 important chapters... XfingersX
9:46am: 2 things
1) We've been getting calls from this random 800 number (8006570082) about once a day for the last two weeks, always before 9am in the morning...for example they called Sunday at 8:30am, Monday at like 8:30, and today at like 8:07! I've picked up the phone a handful of times to bitch them out and there's always silence on the other end (even after like 30 sec), which is mad wierd, and ever so annoying! I finally just hit redial this morning and spoke with a person, they claim to be a bill collection service and were wanting money from someone named PEDRO CASTANEDA (who, btw, is on my shit list right now) a person who hasn't ever lived in this house, and we've had this address and phone number for 3 years! Get your act together bill collecting people! They claim to have taken us off of their call list, so we'll see... and PEDRO pay your bloody bills!
2) For breakfast today I had coffee and jujubees...is that wierd? I feel like my mother would disapprove of this type of breakfast...
and one extra thing) went to see snakes on a plane last night! Classic...
[a] Pick one dozen movies. (I picked them from my own collection!) [b] Pick a few lines of dialogue. [c] As people guess the film, strike out that entry.
1) We need a good assasination, we need an earthquate or a war! How 'bout a crooked politician? Hey stupid, that ain't news no more!
2) Damn, I hate being a foregone conclusion.
3) You have been weighed, you have been measured, and you have been found wanting.
4) Now, a question of etiquette - as I pass, do I give you the ass or the crotch?
5) Hey, there's only two things I do well, sweetheart, and skating's the other one!
6) They all have husbands and wives and children and houses and dogs, and, you know, they've all made themselves a part of something and they can talk about what they do. What am I gonna say? "I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork. How've you been?"
7) He will hear my call a mile away. He will whistle my favorite song. He can ride a pony backwards. He can flip pancakes in the air. He'll be marvelously kind. And his favorite shape will be a star. And he'll have one green eye and one blue.
8) I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request...
9) I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.
10) Those of you lucky enough to have your lives, take them with you. However, leave the limbs you've lost. They belong to me now.
11) Do you want to run this ship? Yes! Well... you can't...
12) I was thinking, if we met under different circumstances, if we were at a bar and I came up to you and we started talking... I wonder what would happen? Nothing! If you didn't know who I was. You'd probably tell me I'm just saying if we met under different curcumstances. You have got to be kidding me!
Extra bonus 13) Barney? Could you not poke the body with a stick, please? I was just seein' somethin'.
Okay chapter 3 draft 1 done! And sent off to "fearless leader"... but I imagine I won't hear back from him for a few weeks (although I might get lucky if he's bored on his flight back from Vienna...)
Anyway... sadly, that's really all. yup. that is pretty much all of the recent excitment in my life so far. which is of course totally lamezor. I haven't even been shopping on the internets! so, unfortunately I think that my journal is going to be like this for a few months... at least until I start to go crazy in anticipation of the final dissertation draft and the defense...
No big plans for the week or the subsequent weekend either. Blegh...enough! I'm even boring myself! Please all you all out there reading this, have some fun for me!
